My realistic, gritty, weathered take on the Hero of the Legend of Zelda series. Based primarily on the Twilight Princess game version of Link, but with some slight changes and tweaks to make he costume appear more "real world." Sort Lord of the Rings meets Zelda, was the idea I originally had in my mind. I additionally made several extra detail items to carry around with this costume, such as the bottle used by Link in the games, the compass that Link uses in each dungeon to carry around, and also several of the dungeon maps from the games. The maps were given away to people at the con who asked for pictures with me and seemed to be big fans of the game, they additionally served as business cards for the website. |

| Inspiration | ||||
| A heavily influence on how I wanted the end product of my costume to look, was a piece of fan art I found the website DeviantArt,called "In The Eyes of Ganon" by ALXNDR-Art: http://alxndr-art.deviantart.com/art/In-the-Eyes-of-Ganon-79122212 | ||||
| Gloves | ||||
| Gloves started life as a pair of 8 dollar yellow cow hide gloves at Wal*mart. They were full fingered gloves so they were cut down to match the half finger look of the game. In order to get them the right color, the gloves were dyed brown with a medium brown leather dye from Tandy leather. | ||||
| Wig, ears, and earrings | ||||
| The wig I used with this costume was actually just a simple $15 “Surfer Dude" wig from Halloween Express. Earrings are a pair of old screw back costume jewelry earrings that I painted blue. Ears are “Evil Ears” from a local Halloween shop. I did not got for the typical huge anime ears or Vulcan-esque ears used by a lot of people because I wanted to do something a little different. | ||||
| Belts | ||||
| Belts were just Tandy Leather belt blanks that were dyed with the same medium brown used on the gloves. The buckles and screw rivets sued to attach the additional strap for the sword belt were purchased at Tandy Leather. For the pouches for the belts, one set I used were surplus leather military pouches, and the others were pouches made for me out of plain leather by John, LoneWolf, to match the two pouches used by Link in the game. | ||||
| Shield | ||||
| Shield started life as one of the Zelda shields easily found on eBay. However, the shields came painted in bright, vibrant colors, which did not fit the the feel of the costume I was going for. So, I stripped all the paint off, repainted it more muted colors, and weathered the shield up with cuts, pits, and gouges, both with a dremel and with a real axe, and then gave the whole thing a black and brown wash, and finally, set parts of it on fire. | ||||
| Sword and Scabbard | ||||
| The sword and scabbard were mad entirely by me. Both started off with cardboard bases that were resined, then bondo’d, then resined again, before being weathered, painted, and additionally weathered again. The reasoning behind scratch making the sword, rather than buying one of the readily available replicas, was that many cons don't allow metal blades to be removed from the sheath, and they have to be peace bonded in, even if the edges are dull. So I made my own so that it would able to used for pictures. | ||||
| Bracer | ||||
| The forearm armor piece was made of craft foam that was dyed with brown leather dyed and then given a coat of resin to give it strength. | ||||
| Soft Goods | ||||
| Tunic is actually a suede material, made by our own Julie B, Snapdragon, and it came out a little too short, but I am happy with how the material looks in pictures and takes to weathering effects like fake blood. I had two sets of forearm bracers, in two different shades of blue denim material, just trying to see which color looked better. One set made by Julie, of Snap Dragon Designs, the other by my friend Brandy. | ||||
| Bottle | ||||
| I additionally made the bottle used by Link in the games. The cork was actually made by me to custom fit this bottle I found. I actually glued several cheap, plain, cork coasters together and slowly sanded them down until they fit the bottle. The label was made based off of art work of the Ocarina of Time Lon Lon milk bottle, and was weathered in the same fashion as the maps. | ||||
| Interior Shield Detail | ||||
| As an extra detail, I placed a map of Hyrule on the inside of the shield. I also put up another little inside joke/extra detail, a pin up of a fairy. The real joke for this comes from the text on the pin up says, "I'll fill up your heart," since fairies in the game will replenish your life meter. | ||||
