Costume History

This costume is from a “looter shooter” game called Destiny 2 made by Bungie. Guardians are the playable characters of the world and Warlocks are one of the in-game Character Classes. This build is a recreation of several different armor pieces in the game, allowing for a unique look in real life and in game.  I debuted this  costume for the first time at the Friday night Costume Contest at Dragon Con 2022.

Build Pieces

  • Helm – Façade of Hezen Lords

  • Chest Armor – Phoenix Protocol

REFERENCES

Everything was built based on the character I actually play as in the Game DESTINY 2. www.bungie.com

I used in game screen shots as my base reference and then actually found images from the creating artists to use as reference for the build.  This was hugely helpful for the Phoenix Protocol Robes which were the critical Piece of the costume.

HELM – FAÇADE OF THE HEZEN LORDS

The helmet from the game I chose is a legend drop from the Vault of Glass Raid. An Iconic Armor piece from both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2. The starting model was purchased from Do3D, but then modified so that each piece could be printed separately and scaled to my own head. This was one of the mode difficult pieces to build as it needed to be scaled perfectly and was broken down into so many different pieces. It took 3 attempts to print to get the scale correct.

After printed the parts were glued together and covered with Bondo and glazing putting. This allowed for the helmet to cleaned up and appear as one piece. Any gaps were filled with JB Weld Sticks and Bondo. Many of the parts were also modified to allow for electronics to be added and to be separate from the rest of the costume.

The helmet was then painted with gold, chrome and black paint to match the targeted in game style. Followed by acrylic paint wash and air brushing to weather and tie in with the rest of the costume aesthetic.

Visor (Note this visor was too small so I modified with carpet tape to fill gaps and hid seams near edges so not noticeable, as maker cannot make visor larger)

CHEST – PHOENIX PROTOCOL (IN GAME EXOTIC)

The chest armor was the main focus of this costume. Being an in-game exotic
piece it had to be iconic and stand out, with the goal to be recognizable. There are hundreds of in game armor pieces but far fewer exotic. I found the creating Bungie Artist’s portfolio in which she shared early renders of the costume I used for reference. Trying to get and create every detail I could. In fact, there
are details included some people would never notice such as the chest armor wrap mirroring that of the games.

This is the one piece of this costume in which everything 3d Printed was sculpted and created by myself.  As far as I could find no one online has ever attempted this piece which made it an extra challenge. I created all the hard 3d printed pieces in blender with hard surface modeling techniques. No base game models were used, only reference pictures.

The pattern for the robe/tunic itself was drafted using multiple different commercial patterns for sizing and reference. I remade the top half of the robe / tunic over 3 times until I got it to fit as desired. The next challenge was to then cover it in bandages as it shows in game, yet still be functional. I tried several techniques until settling on a combination of some sewn into the robe, while others are wrapped and velcroed to allow for a final fitted look.

The front sash is linen and airbrushed to mimic the in game patterns and the sides of the robe are monks cloth with airbrushing to help the stich work pattern stand out.

The tassel and rope work is held in place by the ends being velcroed for the ease of getting into and out of the costume. The ends of many of the tassels / ropes are macromaed to match the style in game and custom arrow end points were made for the loose ends of those not tied. Finally the neck seal is a combination of a tight fitting one to hide the neck, made with rope strands wrapped in latex material, and an outer neck seal that is more baggy like that in the game to make for a more futuristic look in person.

I will share models I made at a later date for those who would like to use: LINK N/A

LEGS, ARMS – REVERIE DAWN

For the leg and Arm pieces I chose the Reverie Dawn Set. I wanted something similar for both pieces that would help tie it all together. It was an added bonus that it was the same Bungie Artist who made the Phoenix Protocol that made these armor pieces.

The armor itself was 3D Printed, and this was the first time I ripped a model from the game and then updated it for 3D Printing myself. Models right from the game need a lot of cleanup before they can be printed, and I made some
mistakes with the legs that required more work post print, but took what I had learned and improved when I did the arms.

Only two things I did not make in this costume are the base gloves and the boots themselves, but they were modified slightly to match the costume design. The under sleeve to the arm armor was not clear in game but I fashioned a
pattern after similar game items without the armor. The legs I started with a standard pant and added the inner leg area, along with the white edging. The colors I chose are based on shaders I found in the game, a chrome and gold that ties into the robe armor. Materials used were linen, hexagonal black and white stretch fabrics.

WARLOCK BOND – STEEPLECHASE BOND

The warlock bond is an armband that is on the left shoulder of the character. I chose the Steeplechase Bond as I liked how it has some of the monster /fantasy vibe that is mixed in with the sci Fi setting of Destiny.

For the bond itself I created the base in Blender and then sculpted the Teeth/Claw like pieces out of sculpy which gave it a nice bone look with the baked sculpy alone. Acrylic Paint was then used to age and weather.

SPECIAL FX

In the game destiny characters and weapons glow so it was important to add FX to add visual cues emulating to that fact. All the FX are controlled via two ARDUINO Micro Controls that I coded random, pattern based, and trigger based FX.  These FX can be random such as a puff of smoke to triggered such as the palm smoke to similar the charging of a grenade throw.

Many of the LED FX actually change randomly over time.  It is subtle but I find it makes it more interesting.  For this costume, many of the lights are hidden on the underside of armor parts with the intention to give a subtle glow.  Future projects I may look for a new way to hide them as this was not noticeable in many lighting situations, but looked great in the dark.

Other thoughts were that I built much of this alone and had a hard timee determining wire length for the harness.  In the future I may sew a harness to run the wires in I wear under the costume.  The only reason I cannot put this costume on alone is because of the current wire harness and how complicated it is to run.

The final piece for this was the smoke FX.  much of dragon con these were temperamental, but only need minor tweaks for the future.  One thing I did which I loved was I could change the smoke from my shoulders to my hand for a charge FX with the flip of a valve.  I just need to iron out how these run, likely with the wiring harness in the future.

Costume – Destiny 2 Warlock
Time: 2 Years
Completed: 2022
Lore / Details:

From Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki

Warlocks are a class of Guardian who are best described as “warrior-scholars,”[1]. They utilize their Traveler-given powers for both attack and defense. Warlocks specialize in ranged melee attacks and cast elemental spells to eliminate their enemies. They are also adept at offering support to fellow Guardians and fireteam members, by healing them and enhancing the strength of their weapons, and are just as comfortable fighting from mid-air as on the ground.

Warlocks may be thinkers, but most I know can hold their own.
Lord Shaxx

Warlocks were the first to tap into the power of the Traveler, wielding its Light as they ventured beyond the safety of the Wall. They know that each discovery offers new possibilities,[2] and they have devoted themselves to understanding the Traveler, its power and how to better channel it. A Warlock’s mind is an arsenal of deadly secrets, balanced between genius and madness. On the battlefield, those secrets can seem to shatter reality itself.[3] They search the frontier to find a means to defeat the Darkness once and for all.[4]

Warlocks are known for pushing the boundaries of knowledge, even into dangerous territory. At least two warlocks, Toland, the Shattered and Osiris, were exiled for studying the Hive and Vex too closely. There also exists an order of warlocks called the Thanatonauts, who take advantage of Guardians ability to resurrect themselves to receive visions every time they die.[5]
